First step is developing a narrative. After going through art school I’m inspired by a mix of ancient, classic, art nouveau, pop art and post modern themes and styles. Often I’ll have a colour scheme I want to reflect in the work.
Next step is selecting a format. I’m a bit of a fan of vertical layouts, and you’ll often see the top of my pieces are sometimes curved or decorative which is inspired by the ancient religious icon styles.
Then I’ll start searching my library for imagery. I’ve collected a heap of dusty old art books and beautiful tomes over the years and my ethos is to bring their pages back to life and in front of people’s by re-using them to create new artworks.
For this piece I’m collecting around the themes of flora and fauna. There’s plenty of local species from Aotearoa New Zealand here already including huia and ruru (morepork) birds.
