“It is through art, and through art only, that we can realise our own perfection,” wrote Oscar Wilde.

This October a Coromandel artist will put her works up for sale with all money raised going towards helping at-risk youth find their own perfection.

Coromandel Town artist Naomi Azoulay Nathan will display her works as part of the Braveheart Art Exhibition being held at the ASB Showgrounds in Auckland.

The Auckland based trust is a volunteer organisation which works with at-risk youths. The goal is to divert young people from the justice system and help them realise their potentials.

Naomi says following her exhibition at Thames’ Sola cafe in April she was contacted by the trust’s founder Liz Caughey.

“I have never been involved in a project like this before but I have been working in education for many years both in New Zealand and abroad.

“As a mother and a teacher, I truly believe that helping the youth to realise their potential is an essential step in creating a just and lawful society in Aotearoa.”

Naomi says she is thrilled to know that through her art she can help a group of young people realise their potential.

The Braveheart Trust Art Exhibition will feature more than 160 emerging and well-known artists from around the country.

On display will be 650 artworks for viewing and sale – comprising of paintings, prints, photographs, sculptures and objets d’art – and will fill 1090 square metres of wall space.

When putting together exhibitions she gives herself the brief of “quality, affordable, collectable art”.

“Wherever I go I’m looking for artists that I might include and I’ve been gathering names since the last exhibition in 2010

“Many and Troy are just so talented and I’m really excited by the work that we have got coming from them.”

Proceeds from the exhibition will be used towards youth programs that the trust has supported over the past five years.

A donation will also be made to the In Zone Education Foundation towards the new girls’ hostel to be opened in 2015.

Braveheart provides a team of more than 30 volunteer homework tutors at the In Zone boys’ hostel four nights a week, says Liz.

“This is home to 54 Maori and Pacific Island boys from disadvantaged circumstances around New Zealand.

“Because they are now ‘in zone’ they attend Auckland Grammar School where they benefit from an excellent, rounded education.”

Art-lovers can get a first viewing of all the works during the Gala Preview on October 16, starting at 6.30pm.

Live music, canapés and beverages is on offer so come along and enjoy a glass of wine with friends amidst quality pieces of art, says Liz.

The 2014 Braveheart Art Exhibition will held at the ASB Showgrounds in Auckland from October 17 to 19.

It runs on Friday and Saturday, from 10am to 4pm, and Sunday from 10am to 3pm.
