EXHIBITION

Where Are You From?

Portraits of New Zealanders by Naomi Azoulay

From Monday, 15 July to Saturday 10 August 2024

Exhibition opening: Mon 15 July 2024,  5:30-7:00 pm

Location: Gallery 3, Refinery ArtSpace. 114, Hardy Street, Nelson.

When people of ethnic backgrounds are asked, “Where are you from?” not only does this question imply a lack of belonging, but it is also laden with assumptions. One of these assumptions is that there is a simple answer to the question, that they are from one specific place or background.

In reality, people’s backgrounds are complex and layered. Within this collection, each portrait offers a nuanced depiction, showcasing individuality while celebrating agency, strength, and beauty.

Immerse yourself in a vibrant and captivating collection of representational portraits featuring individuals from diverse ethnic backgrounds in Aotearoa at the Refinery ArtSpace, 114 Hardy Street, Nelson, from Monday, July 15, for a month.

The 8th Whau Art festival is starting tomorrow with plenty of cool events in Avondale and neighboring suburbs.
I’ll be taking part in a group exhibition alongside Abhi Chinniah, Ladybug, and spdrtwnbby at ALL GOODS, 99 Rosebank Rd (by Avondale Library carpark).
ALL GOODS will be open throughout the Festival; from Thursday 31 March to Sunday 3 April, 11 am to 4 pm.

This is one of my oil paintings from this exhibition, of the singer and songwriter Cesária Évora.

Size: H760 x W1010 x 35 mm.

You are invited to take part in a community collage event.
Pop into the Titirangi Community House anytime between 10 am and 4 pm on Saturday 8th May,  and leave your mark by taking part in the creation of a collaborative collage.
All ages are warmly welcome!
It only takes a few minutes to leave your mark.

You will be asked to choose an image of your liking, cut it out to shape if necessary, and glue it onto the board- that’s all that it takes.

There will be lots of printed material for you to choose from or you can bring your image from home.

It can be anything printed on paper; a photo, newspaper/magazine cutout, a flyer, old maps, drawings, paintings, postcards, letters, documents, bills, recipes, lists, music notes, poetry (as long as it’s not offensive material), anything goes.
